Why Consulting?

Being a top manager, executive or business owner for more than a quarter of a century, if there is one thing I've learned it is that there is always more to know about my organization. I'm always very surprised when I find something I have overlooked. Of course, if I had known about it I wouldn't have overlooked it! Well this is where another viewpoint comes in - the viewpoint one can get from a consultant.

Once upon a time we were having problems with our marketing division. Not only were we having problems getting personnel to grasp their posts but also getting enough production out of the unit even when there were lots of people in the area.

When talking to a fellow consultant he pointed out a policy, a piece of tech that Hubbard had written specifically regarding the qualifications of the hiring of these people that I had completely forgotten about. We applied the policy and poof! like magic all the confusion dropped away and the area became productive!

A good consultant knows the "ideal scene" for any practice and from that ideal he can compare your existing scene. You can then compare your existing scene to the ideal and this gives you a much greater understanding of what must be occurring, good or bad. To really understand something, as Hubbard points out, one must have a datum of comparable magnitude.

Our clients are always amazed at the difference in their practice after they have gotten rid of any defiant negative or unproductive staff and replaced them with willing and able staff. They exclaim it's the difference between night and day and wanting to come to the practice versus not enjoying the workplace or not even wanting to be there in extreme cases. Until they have a comparable datum (truly willing staff and what it is like not having any defiant negative or unwilling staff) they, one for one, do not understand the real difference. Had they really understood this they would have solved the problem ages ago.
